Compensation: $3,850.00: Based on 25 hours/week for 6 weeks at $25.33/hour

Hours: Part time; 25 Flexible Hours a Week; From Feb 10th – March 31st 2017

Job Summary

The Indigenous & LGBTQ+ Project Coordinator (ILP Coordinator) of the Rainbow Coalition is mainly responsible for designing, coordinating and implementing projects during the contract period. The ILP Coordinator will also be responsible for staffing the Rainbow Youth Centre two days a week and to facilitate a discussion group over the course of these 6 weeks. The successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check prior to employment.

The ILP Coordinator will work with the Indigenous Director on our Board of Directors to put together projects that support the following goals:

  •  To provide an opportunity for Indigenous queer, trans or Two-Spirit youth to have access to knowledge from people who share this identity; and
  • To support the health, wellbeing, and growth of Indigenous queer, trans or Two-Spirit youth in and around Yellowknife.

This is a contract position, however funding is currently being requested to be able to maintain this position on a more permanent basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Upholds and maintains the sentiment of a youth organization, driven and governed by youth themselves
  • Acts as the spokesperson on projects to any media or communications request
  • Attends board meetings
  • Ensures the safety of the youth who access the Rainbow Youth Centre the Rainbow Youth Centre two days a week (3:30pm – 8:00pm)
  • Facilitates a weekly discussion group on a topic to be decided

The Rainbow Coalition of Yellowknife is an organization governed by mostly youth, and therefore are prioritizing hiring people who our organization recognizes as youth (people under 30).


  • Personal, lived understanding of LGBTQ+ identity
  • Personal, lived understanding of Northern Indigenous identity
  • Experience managing a youth project
  • Experience working in youth-centred spaces or organizations
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to engage with and interact with youth in a non-patronizing way
  • Comfortable speaking or presenting in front of small and large groups


  • Knowledge of intersectionality and concepts of marginalization, oppression, power and privilege are a must
  • Committed to ending or working to end heterosexism, cissexism, monosexism, homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia
  • Committed to ending or working to end colonialism and violence against Indigenous people
  • Knowledge of another official language of the NWT is considered an asset
