Northwest Territories MLAs All in Pink!

On Wednesday, April 24th 2016, territorial MLAs showed their support for Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day is the International Day Against Bullying and it’s a day where everybody around the country chooses to wear pink as an act of solidarity with those who experience bullying every day.

It’s important to participate in events like this, because it brings more awareness to the realities for young people (and old!) who have to navigate bullying, which is most often than not, also violence. It Gets Better Yellowknife thanks all the Members who participated in the event, and especially thanks the Members who chose to discuss Pink Shirt Day during Session on Wednesday. Mr. Kieron Testart, Mr. Cory Vanthuyne, Mr. Shane Thompson and the Honourable Alfred Moses all discussed the importance of standing up against bullying during the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

It Gets Better Yellowknife is so happy to be organizing the Days of Pink, a continuation of Pink Shirt Day with a special focus on LGBTQ+ young people and homophobic & transphobic bullying. Pink Shirt Day is great to bring awareness to the issue of bullying, but we need concrete action and honest conversation. The Days of Pink are about talking honestly and openly with our peers about the bullying and violence that people deal with when expressing their love and their gender. We believe that when talking honestly and openly about these things, we’re able to educate ourselves and fight ignorance in our community.

We want to invite MLAs and other community leaders to stand in solidarity with us and support the Days of Pink. To learn how to get involved, visit the Days of Pink page or contact us!

We Want You!

  • Are you under 19 years old?
  • Do you identify as queer or trans?
  • Do you live in Yellowknife?
  • Are you interested in queer or trans organizing?

In November 2015, The Canadian Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) asked Mayor Heyck and the City of Yellowknife to organize an event called “Day of Pink” in celebration of the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination, Homophobia, Transphobia and Transmisogyny on April 13th 2016. In response to this, Mayor Heyck reached out to us to take on this effort!

Currently, we’re in the process of organizing the Day of Pink celebrations for Yellowknife, on April 13th 2016 and we’re looking to form a committee to help this process along. We especially want queer and trans youth on the committee!

If you’re interested, make sure you contact us!
