The 2019 Days of Pink Mini Conference brings together allies, LGBTQ2S+ youth, parents/families, community members, and leaders of our community to further outreach and education on LGBTQ2S+ issues. This is our first year doing a mini conference and we are so excited to bring together the Yellowknife community! Below you’ll find detailed descriptions of the workshops, and the registration form.
AM Sessions – 9:00AM – 10:30AM
Dene Culture & Queerness by Jiah Dzentu
In this presentation, Jiah will be speaking to her experience as a queer Dene reclaiming her place on the Land, the tricky intersections of Dene culture and queerness, and the availability of queer-friendly spaces in on-the-Land settings. A circle discussion will follow and then small breakout groups will be encouraged to brainstorm ideas on how we can create a queer-inclusive on-the-Land programming.
The Art of Drag by Hayden Watson (Indigo)
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to do basic drag makeup, how to cover up sections of your face (i.e. your eyebrows, beard), how to find a style that fits your persona, and how to develop that persona to create a fully-rounded character fit for a stage.
Inclusive Business & Community Organizing by Chelsea Thacker
This session will inform local businesses and non-profits on how to tailor their service provision to be inclusive of the LGBTQ2S+ community in a few easy steps. Policy, procedure, products and websites all can be deterrents for LGBTQ2S+ people seeking safe, inclusive environments.
AM Sessions – 10:30AM – 12:00PM
Supportive and Inclusive Families by Lane MacIntosh
Early Childhood Educator Lane MacIntosh will spend this workshop teaching ways to create safe, inclusive environments for children and youth, and will work on problem-solving situations families come up against. Tips and tricks on how to work with the school systems, difficult extended family members and gender-inclusive play will also be covered.
Lunch with Leaders Prep by Rainbow Coalition of Yellowknife
Those interested in attending Lunch with Leaders are welcome to attend this prep session, where facilitators will help youth organize their thoughts, social justice issues and goals to present to leaders at the lunch.
Lunch 12:00PM – 2:00PM
Lunch with Leaders
This session is a two hour lunch and discussion where youth in the community get to sit down face-to-face with leaders and bring forward issues and concerns, and work together to develop strategies and goals to work through the presented problems. This year the youth take charge and we ask leaders to take a listening seat, as it is not every day youth get the opportunity to have their voice heard.
PM Session – 2:00PM – 4:00PM
Transgender & Non-Binary Health Forum
Do you care about transgender and non-binary health? Come to this session to hear a panel of transgender and non-binary people and LGBTQ2S+-focused health care professionals answer questions and talk about issues, concerns and problem areas within our healthcare systems (physical health, mental health, etc.). We welcome youth, service providers, healthcare professionals, community members and other transgender & non-binary people in the community to sit in on this conversation, and help us create a list of recommendations to bring forward to the Department of Health & Social Services.
